AEON, Step 1: Hello World!

Welcome to AEON!

Home of the Ad-hoc Emergency Online Network.

Inspired by Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, a story of resistance by H.M. Forester.

The AEON Network

This image contains a scene in nature showing a group of people sitting around a communal campfire in a grassy area, with a large tent nearby, various trees dotted around, and a pond in the foreground. The scene is framed on the left and right foreground by tall, shadowy tree trunks and branches. Together, the roots, trunks and branches of the two trees enclose the camping scene in a circle. On the horizon and high above the heads of the campers is a glowing, blue green logo designed to look like computer circuitry, which symbolises the AEON community, and bearing the name AEON, which stands for Ad-hoc Emergency Online Network. There's more, smaller glowing circuity in the foreground, to the left and right, at the base of the two trees that frame the picture. Image generated by DALL-E, via ChatGPT.

AEON is a decentralised, trust-based, non-hierarchical, democratic, browser-based, online network (with no vulnerable central server or database). It uses gossip to propagate individual users' digitally-signed registry entries (using a private key) containing details such as hostname, IP address, nickname, X509 security certificate, and personal biography or blurb on any site and community resources they choose to host in the network.

A would-be member can contact any other registered member, via the latter's built-in server (a http web server running on port 8008), and become a registered member of the AEON network.

Any registered member can moderate users' behaviour, and it is up to individual members which (if any) moderators they trust, and hence whether or not to act on their trusted moderators' actions. Though we can't block individuals from a decentralised network like AEON, we can limit their audience reach by applying trusted moderator overrides. This will limit the propagation of the individual's registry entry and updates, and hence reduce their social reputation and reach in the network.

Our Books and Documents

Since the future of the Internet Archive's library can no longer be guaranteed, due to massive lawsuits by book publishers and music companies, I've backed-up some files at Facebook.

Etienne de L'Amour's mystical adventure, H.M. Forester's soft sci-fi, and other short documents are now available in the Mystical Faction group's Files section.

An Unholy Vision, from Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt

A painting by Gwabryel, based on H. P. Lovecraft's story The Call of Cthulhu. It shows a man with arms outstretched worshipping a very tall, black figure. To his left and right, victims are suspended upside down from gallows, and in front of the dark figure are several other, perhaps tormented figures.
“Some want to turn the clock back, harkening back to some golden age of nostalgia, when women, children, the lower class, parishioners, and people of other races and creeds knew their place; not back to the 1950s, but further back: to Dickensian times and to (corporate) feudal fiefdom. They want to wind the clock back to a time before the hard-won battles for civil rights, social reforms, and worker representation. A time long, long before the ‘woke virus’, ‘illegal immigrants’, and gender identity, when life was more conservative and white lives mattered; though with a new, fundamentalist, Christian nationalist (or Islamist, or ultra-Zionist, or even atheist) and isolationist twist. And some will go to any lengths – and I do mean any desperate, violent, draconian lengths – to bring this vile and unholy vision about.”

~ H.M. Forester, Preface to Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt.

The Scent of Reality and other short stories, by H. M. Forester

“A number of people find themselves at a strange and unexpected meeting in the back room of an English pub with an elderly lady, Gladys Merrywether, and tell their stories about why they are there and what led them there.

“The shrewd lady opens their eyes to all manner of possibilities – some of which are welcome, and some decidedly not.”

Secret Friends: The Ramblings of a Madman in Search of a Soul

The first draft of the psi-fi work Secret Friends: The Ramblings of a Madman in Search of a Soul, by H. M. Forester, has just been released.

Secret Friends book cover.

The writer and thinker Idries Shah laid out his contemporary, Western projection of the Sufi Way in a great many books over the years, and Secret Friends draws, in part, on the inner experiences of Robert Llewelyn George in his faltering attempts to follow that mystical path.

The intrepid psychonaut, Carl Gustav Jung also documents his own inner travels in his Red Book, and later in his published journals, the Black Books.

This, then, you might call Louie’s Little Green Book.

In Search of Destiny (2019) by Etienne de L'Amour

The mystical adventure, In Search of Destiny, the second book in the series which I wrote ten years ago under the pseudonym Etienne de L'Amour, has been revised, edited, reformatted and has now been republished for the Kindle on 14 April 2019.

Although preceded by the mystical sci-fi adventure Escape from the Shadowlands, this is a stand-alone book and may be read first.

The book is available for download at:
Amazon UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007ATPCUM
Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ATPCUM

In Search of Destiny is set in the disparate realms of the Outlands; Sher Point, the metropolis of the Freelands, and the mystical kingdom of Narayana in the East.

It tells the story of Conrad Harper, who sets out one day to search for his destiny and heart’s true desire; of the help offered him by a mysterious organization known simply as the Network; his journeys with the Master of the Tradition, Tenzing Jangbu Rinchen, and of his finding romance, ancient knowledge, unfettered awareness and wholeness of being.

And it shows how ordinary and everyday experiences, which we tend to take for granted and often do not value, can be brought into service and woven together into a rich tapestry with an altogether higher purpose.

Any help with spreading the message would be an enormous help and greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Game of Aeons: A short novel, republished for Kindle

Again with a little less hoo-hah than Brexit, I'm delighted to reveal that the mystical sci-fi adventure, Game of Aeons: A short novel by H.M. Forester has been revised, edited, reformatted and has now been republished for the Kindle.

Young Robin Hargreaves is looking for something to occupy his time and spice up his life. Apparently by chance, whilst perusing the wares in a second-hand shop, he is introduced to Game of Aeons, a computer simulation.

In the game, he meets up with a young lady, Ellie, who takes him under her wing. Despite her youth, Ellie has risen to the ranks of a veteran in the game and as well as a loving heart, she has a wise head on her shoulders.

Robin soon discovers that like life itself, Games of Aeons is not all beer and skittles. As he becomes more and more involved and immersed in the game, it becomes increasingly real and at times frightening. But by the time he realizes this, it is too late to back out and there is too much at stake – not only in-game but also in what we commonly and mistakenly think of as the Real World.

As it turns out, though Robin initially has no inkling of this, the game leads Robin to the greatest open secret that the world has ever known.

Escape From the Shadowlands, free 24-28 July 2013 (updated)

Update: This title is now back to its regular price of $2.99.

Free promotion updated and extended:

Escape From the Shadowlands by Etienne de L'Amour, a soft scifi / mystical adventure ebook, is FREE for your Kindle from Wednesday 24 to Sunday 28 July 2013, inclusive, Pacific Standard Time.

☆☆☆☆☆ "Astounding, dizzying journey! Entertaining, enlightening."

If you like Doris Lessing's Shikasta, James Hilton's Lost Horizon, Idries Shah or the legendary Sarmoun Brotherhood, then give this book a try. Escape From the Shadowlands is preceded by two prequels, but it stands on its own and is self-contained, so this is probably the best book to begin reading the Shadowlands series.

Thank You, I Understand: Etienne de L'Amour

Etienne de L'Amour has just released a new, standalone novel, Thank You, I Understand.

This factional work takes the reader on an evolutionary journey of self-rediscovery from near Neanderthal to sentient human being in a thousand and one fraught lessons.

A psychological drama, it explores the murky depths of the unregenerate psyche, trials and redemption; passionate romance; the wise voice of inner-tuition, and the heightened awareness of eventual spiritual reawakening. An awakening into a strange world pregnant with deep meaning in which we see revealed an awe-inspiring hidden design at work amidst the everyday life which we mistakenly take to be the real world.

Rocky Rhodes is one wave short of a shipwreck as the story begins, going through a period of teenage rebellion, amidst a subculture of sex, drugs and rock and roll, and later he experiences psychosis and schizophrenia. But his life begins to take on new direction when he is introduced to the way of the Sufi mystics.

Thank You, I Understand is a standalone novel of around 80,000 words.

The book is available for the Kindle at Amazon US, Amazon UK and other Amazon web sites: ASIN: B009KCNLHS. It is free of DRM (digital rights management) to make it easier to read and share.

You can also find the book at Goodreads.

A free preview (in Kindle/.mobi or .epub format) is available 24/7 from our Dropbox site. The preview is also available in pdf format at our mirror web site (on-line 10:00 to 22:30 hours, UK time, most days).
