Not content with hijacking "red-pilled" and claiming to be a key player in the Resistance, Musk (and his alt-right ilk) are now perversely using The Lord of the Rings to describe the "invasion" by migrants, equating the latter, and presumably liberals, with the Dark forces and aligning themselves (the Right) with the light, while the simple Shire folk have no idea what's going on in the wider world and the forces supposedly fighting in part to protect them.
Musk maybe hasn't read the two chapters at the end of the book, missing from the films, which show the desecration of the Shire by militancy and dark Satanic mills and the chopping down of trees which, like war – a necessary evil at best, but always a source of profound suffering – J.R.R. Tolkien absolutely abhorred.
This is all very deliberate, and deeply malignant.

And meanwhile, Trump, MAGA, the Republican party, Musk, and other shadowy figures, are busy erasing and rewriting history, bulldozing culture, civil society, community and even personal identity, burying us in cruelty, lies and propaganda, turning their backs on sustainability in favour of genocidal and ecocidal growth, and embarking on plans to carve up the Western world; perhaps even leaving the Russians and Chinese to carve up their own empires in the rest of the world. Musk himself has also just launched his AI-powered, right-wing-biased and opaque answer to Wikipedia (which he dubbed "Wokepedia"), Grokipedia, or "Grotipedia" as some of Musk's critics are calling it: grotty meaning unpleasant, of bad quality, or wretchedly shabby.
As Galadriel's prophetic words at the start of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring warn us: "The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it."
Let us hope and pray, and also make practical preparations, to ensure that those foundational transcendentals, the Good, the Beautiful, and the True – all that is worth living, suffering, and even dying for – are kept alive in our hearts and in the hearts of those who follow on from us. Even if we lose these contemporary battles, perhaps in a conflict that lasts generations, and assuming humanity itself does not perish.
